Lou Reed and Red Symons, they kinda look the same and the achieved pretty much the same amount of fame.
Lou Reed was the singer/songwriter/guitarist for The Velvet Underground who then went on to bigger fame as a solo artist. Red Symons was the guitarist for The Skyhooks..his later claim to fame was as the gong basher for Hey Hey It’s Saturday.
CCS(Cansei de Ser Sexy), which pretty much means “I got tired of being sexy” are the latest indie band to explode thanks to the wonderful world of advertising. Their song “Music Is My Hot Hot Sex” was featured as part of an I-pod advertising campaign and since then the band has exploded. Have you seen their video on YouTube? It’s had 110 million views. Perhaps it is because so many people are typing “Hot Hot Sex” into YouTube. Ok, so its a fucking catchy song, i will admit that. Anyway, check the video out -
So anyhow now i’m thinking of bands that have had a leg up thanks to advertising campaigns. It’s a Saturday afternoon. I’m bored. I made a list. Check it.

www.amiestreet.com
Demand based pricing for MP3s. The more popular an MP3 the higher the purchase price. Nothing is over 98c. It’s a pretty cool site. Anyone can join and upload their own music. You can also get credits for recommending music to other users. If the song you recommended becomes popular then you can use the credits to buy other songs and albums. Cool stuff! Have a look.
Idlewild – Love Leads Us From Loneliness
Why is it that Idlewild remind me of R.E.M? My guess is it’s in the lyrics and vocals. This song reminds me of Document era R.E.M why? I dunno.
Tapes N’ Tapes – Cowbell
Tapes N’ Tapes can only be described as a B52’s/Violent Femmes bangfest. They’re actually god damn catchy, enjoyable and tasty. This song is two and a half minutes of gold. Sample lyric: “I’ve been a better lover with your mother”. Seriously, download it.
The Foxboro Hot Tubs – Ruby Room
It’s Green Day in disguise, but you already knew that. It also sounds a hell of a lot better than Green Day too. This song should remind me of slags, slappers, overpriced beer… Then again i’m pretty sure you have no idea what i’m on about..unless you also live in Perth. This song is a massive tip of the hat to garage rock.
Cake – Shut The Fuck Up
Thats right, i just like the song title.
Detroit Grand Pubahs – We Can Make Sandwiches
I can’t tell you how many times i have laughed at this song over the years. It’s kinda an in-joke between friends.
Leonard Cohen – Hallelujah (and) Take This Waltz
Recent rock n’ roll hall of fame inductee, Mr Leonard Cohen. I wanna drink beer in Munich with a big breasted fraulein on my lap…whilst reading the bible, no i’m not going to explain.
Mr Big – To Be With You
I like it, please don’t tease me. Honestly, he can sing. The guitar solo is high class.
Liam Finn – Better To Be (and) Second Chance
Like a pure bred greyhound, except a man. This is Neil Finns (Crowded House/Split Enz) son. Add to that his touring partner EJ Barnes (Daughter to Jimmy Barnes) and you end up with the goldest of gold. Below is a video of the two when they recently played on the late show with David Letterman. It’s good way to end this post.
The Smashing Pumpkins, Queens Of The Stoneage, Duran Duran, Jesus and Mary Chain..and so on.
I saw The Smashing Pumpkins at Pinkpop last May. They weren’t as good as i thought they would be, but that was only their 3rd show back. I’m hoping for awesomeness and no goony costumes this time around. On the flip side, Queens Of The Stoneage and Duran Duran…total.awesome.fullstop.
Blast From The Past -
Check it! Its Billy Boy! Pinkpop Festival May 29th 2007.
So as i do every monday, i grabbed myself a copy of the latest NME magazine. This week i found myself with a nice surprise. Not only did i get my NME fix, but i also got a free CD. Usually i’m quite wary about free CD’s, because they involve shitty songs that i can’t be arsed piddling about with, but this one was different. It featured musicians covering popular songs of recent times. It ’s a mixture of mint and gold.
Most importantly it featured The Manic Street Preachers covering a song which was all know too well, and that song is “Umbrella” by Ribena or whatever the shit her name is. Now, i’m not a fan of the original version of this song. I think it mainly stems from a long, deep hate for Jay-Z and anything Jay-Z related…but this version rocks. Just goes to show that some pop songs can be great, all they need is some gonads and distorted guitars.
The Manic Street Preachers..handsome sons o’ bitches..
Who knew that twenty years on Manics could still record gold?, even if it is a cover of a pop song…this shits brilliant, seriously download it. Its Rock N Roll to illegally download music.
Manics perform “Umbrella” live @ NME BIG GIG 28 Feb 2008
Other songs on the CD that gave me a hard-on -
Get Cape, Wear Cape, Fly covering D.A.N.C.E by Justice
The Kooks covering Young Folks by Peter, Bjorn and John
